27 die in rain-related incidents in northern India

At least 27 people have been killed in rain-related incidents in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh in the past 24 hours, officials said Friday.

"While five people lost their lives in Agra, four deaths were reported in Mainpuri, three each in Muzaffarnagar and Kasganj, two each in Meerut and Bareilly and one each in Kanpur Dehat, Mathura, Ghaziabad, Hapur, Jhansi, Rae Bareli, Jalaun and Jaunpur," a state government official told the media.

Meanwhile, 12 people sustained injuries as heavy rains lashed the state since Thursday morning, another official said.

State Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to carry out relief and rescue work, he added.

The weather department has predicted more rains in the state in the next 48 hours.

Rain-related deaths are common in northern India during the monsoon every year.
