At least 12 have died so far in Maharashtra where water level was starting to recede in Sangli and Kolhapur districts, the worst hit by the flood fury.

Over 5,000 NDRF personnel have been pressed into rescue and relief operations.

Kerala is worst hit with reports of 45 deaths over the past three days, as rail and air services were hit and authorities scrambled to rescue people from low-lying and submerged areas.

States have also sought the help of Army, Navy, Air Force as well as teams of local police and SDRF for the rescue efforts.

The IMD had issued a red alert in seven Kerala districts yesterday on August 10.
