A new geological fault that is active but not visible on the earth's surface was discovered by Chilean scientists south of Constitucion city, in the Maule region.

The finding was made by a group of experts led by geologist and DSc. Daniel Melnick, an academic from the Earth Sciences Institute of the Austral University of Chile.

Melnick explained to the media that the fault, discovered in the town of El Yolki, shows a deformation in the last 4,000 years, but does not have a clear surface rupture, so it is 'hidden,' which does not mean it cannot cause an earthquake.

The research highlights the millennial variations in faults and the seismic cycle of major earthquakes in Chile, with global implications for assessing the dangers posed by hidden, but potentially seismogenic coastal faults along subduction zones.
