It is one of the priority projects of the Serbian government in the field of innovation and the construction works will cost 5 mln euros, he said.

The concept is supported by CERN, the Network of National Institutes of Italy (INFN) and DESY, the biggest scientific facility in Germany.

"The construction of the centre as a small section of CERN is an ideal way for a small country to jump in and compete in the scientific big league," Bogojevic said.

The centre, which will bring together scientists from around the world, was named after Italian Renaissance painter Andrea del Verrocchio, whose students included Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti.
