A newly-discovered asteroid could collide with Earth in a matter of decades, astronomers fear.

The space rock dubbed 2019 SU3 doesn't pose a threat now, but could do in 65 years' time.

2019 SU3 was added to the European Space Agency's Risk List this week and is expected to make a close pass to our planet by 2084.

Based on estimates of trajectory, which are constantly becoming more accurate as technology develops, the rock will passt within about 9,700 kilometres of Earth.

While that may seem like a safe distance, the moon is more than 383,000 kilometres away.

Estimates show the rock has about a 1 per cent chance of colliding with Earth.

But even though it's unlikely, it's not the safe zero per cent scientists like to see, meaning 2019 SU3 is featured on the Risk List.
