Three patients infected with the deadly Ebola virus escaped from a hospital holding them in quarantine in the Congo city of Mbandaka, an aid group said, as medics raced to stop the disease spreading in the teeming river port.

Another left on Saturday, but was found alive the same day and is now under observation, Mr Gray added. It's not a prison. Worrying factors include the spread of confirmed cases to Mbandaka city and the fact that five health workers have been infected, signaling "a potential for further amplification", he said.

"We're on the epidemiological knife edge of this response". Health minister Oly Ilunga was accompanied by representatives of the World Health Organization and UNICEF.

But concerns are still high that the disease could spread easily from Mbandaka - a city of over a million people - given its direct link by river, to the capital, Kinshasa.

South Sudan and the United Nations health agency have launched a sensitization and awareness campaign against Ebola to enhance preparedness in the country following an outbreak in Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
