China's top expert predicts basic control over Wuhan coronavirus during April

China's top respiratory disease expert today predicted gaining "basic control" over Wuhan coronavirus outbreak by the end of April, as the country recorded its lowest death toll in nearly a month.

Zhong Nanshan, who heads a high level expert team at the National Health Commission, told a press conference in the southern city of Guangzhou that the outbreak in China has not yet peaked but should between the middle and end of February.

Given that the number of daily new infections has been on a downward trend, Zhong said, "We are confident that we will have basic control by the end of April."

The number of deaths on the mainland has risen by 29 to 2,744, with confirmed infections increasing by 433 to 78,497, the commission said today.
