South Korea's export grows 7.2 percent for first 10 days of August

South Korea's export grew for the first 10 days of this month on a slight rise in business days, customs office data showed Wednesday.

Export, which accounts for about half of the export-driven economy, amounted to 15 billion U.S. dollars during the Aug. 1-10 period, up 7.2 percent from the same period of last year, according to Korea Customs Service.

It was mainly attributed to more business days. The number of working days in the cited period was 7.5, compared with 7.0 in the same period of last year. The daily average export inched up 0.04 percent in the 10-day period.

Export of telecommunication devices, such as smartphone, more than doubled in the 10-day period, while shipments for cars and electronic products posted a double-digit expansion.

Semiconductor export tumbled 33.3 percent, and the oil product shipment reduced 3.7 percent.

Exports to the United States, the European Union and Vietnam advanced in double digits.

Import climbed 3.3 percent to 14.1 billion dollars in the cited period, sending the trade surplus to 0.9 billion dollars.
