Italy's overall unemployment slightly increases

Italy's overall jobless rate rose slightly on a monthly basis in April, while unemployment among the youth continued falling, provisional data by Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) showed.

Seasonally-adjusted national unemployment was at 11.7 percent, posting a 0.1 percent increase over March, ISTAT said.

Unemployment among people aged 15-24 was at 34.1 percent, down by 0.4 percent over the previous month and by 3.0 percent on an annual basis

It was the lowest level registered since February 2012, according to Ansa news agency.

In terms of numbers, some 22.87 million people were employed in Italy in March, unchanged over the previous month, according to ISTAT.

Unemployed people were 3.02 millions, with a 1.4 percent monthly increase.

Inactivity rate, showing the portion of the population that is not in the national labor force, was at 34.7 percent, essentially unchanged over March.

On a monthly basis, employment fell by some 55,000 units among people over 50, and increased in the remaining age classes, especially by 44,000 units among people aged 15-24, the statistical office also stated.

The number of employees increased both among people with permanent contracts and those with temporary contracts, while it dropped by some 70,000 units among self-employed people.

The employment rate was stable at 57.6 percent.
