The reading undershot the 6.1% rise that markets analysts had expected. The deceleration came largely on the back of a sharp slowdown in sales of motor vehicles, motorcycles and parts.

Meanwhile, annual average growth in retail sales rose from August’s 2.7% to 3.1% in September, the highest reading since December 2014.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists see private consumption growing 3.6% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast.

For 2017, the panel sees private consumption expanding 3.5%, which is also unchanged from last month’s projection.
