Germany: Inflation edges up in November

Consumer prices rose 0.3% in November compared to the prior month, according to data released by the Federal Statistics Office (Destatis) on 13 December.

The result matched market expectations and was supported by a notable increase in energy prices.

Inflation edged up to 1.8% in November, also in line with market expectations. The result was above the previous month’s figure of 1.6%. Annual average inflation, however, was flat in November at October’s print of 1.7%.

Harmonized inflation (HICP) also increased in November, to 1.8% from 1.5% in October; as a result, average HICP inched up from 1.6% in October to 1.7% in November.

The Central Bank expects inflation of 1.4% in 2018. FocusEconomics panelists see inflation averaging 1.6% in 2018, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2019, panelists forecast inflation of 1.8%.
