Bangladesh remittance drops 17 percent in H1

Bangladesh's overall remittance inflow fell by 17.63 percent year on year to $6,166.85 million in the first half of 2016-17 fiscal year, a central bank official said.

According to a Bangladesh Bank (BB) official, who preferred to be unnamed, overseas Bangladeshis in December last year sent home $958.73 million, 26.93 percent lower than the same month in 2015.

In the 2015-2016 fiscal year ending June last year, the inflow of remittance, one of the key sources of foreign exchange for the nation, reached a record high of $14.93 billion, the BB data showed.

Most of the income came from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Kuwait, Britain, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Singapore, Bahrain, Italy and Australia, according to the bank.
