Whitbread Q3 sales increased 10%, Premier Inn up 11%

Whitbread sales rose 10% for the third quarter ended November 26 compared with the equivalent period a year earlier. The U.K. pub and café owner on track to report full-year results in line with market expectations.

Whitbread, reporting for the first time with ex-banker Alison Brittain as chief executive, said that sales on a comparable business rose 3.5%.

At Premier Inn, the group's budget hotel business, total sales grew 11% - reflecting 4.7% growth in revenue on a comparable basis and a 7.4% rise in the number of available rooms - with particularly strong growth in London.

Growth at Whitbread's restaurants business was a more modest 1.7% on a comparable basis. Sales at the group's Costa coffee-bar chain rose 14%, equivalent to 2.5% on a comparable basis with the same quarter last year, despite slack demand in November.
