Whitbread Q1 sales grow 8% thanks to Costa, Premier Inn

Whitbread's continued momentum in its Premier Inn and Costa brands helped lift the company's first-quarter sales growth, the company's chief executive said Tuesday.

"Whitbread delivered total sales growth of 8% in the first quarter as we continue with a relentless focus on our customers, innovation and investing in our strong brands.

Costa has started the year well and Premier Inn continues to win share, albeit in a weaker-than-expected hotel market," Alison Brittain said.

For the 13 weeks to June 2, the hotels and coffee-shop operator's like-for-like sales rose 1.8% from the prior year and total sales rose 8.0%.

At Premier Inn, the firm's budget hotel business, like-for-like sales were up 2.1% during the period and Costa coffee-bar chain recorded like-for-like sales growth of 2.6%.

"Although it is early in our new financial year and despite current market conditions, with the benefit of our cost efficiency program we remain confident of making good progress for the full year," Ms Brittain said.
