Volvo's September sales shot up 18.4 percent in the United States but dropped slightly in Western Europe, the carmaker's largest market.

However, sales in Europe so far in 2015 remain 5.4 percent higher than at the same time last year.

"Our growth in Europe and the U.S. reflects the positive customer reception of the new (SUV model) Volvo XC90," said Alain Visser, Volvo Cars' vice president of marketing, sales and customer service.

Volvo has sold some 346,000 cars so far in 2015, a 2-percent increase on the same period last year.
