Uber Technologies said it is closing down its Uberpop low-cost car-hailing service in the Netherlands after a lengthy battle with authorities.

The difficulty with regulators centered on the service’s use of drivers who don’t possess professional licenses. The move to shutter UberPop takes effect on Friday.

The San Francisco-based company’s higher-end services UberX and UberBlack, which use drivers with professional licenses, will continue in the four major Dutch cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague.

Uber has faced regulatory backlash and scrutiny around the world, but Europe has been a particularly tough battlefield. The Uberpop ride-hailing app has been banned in the Netherlands for nearly a year. It has also been outlawed in Germany, France and Belgium.
