Shaw Communications Net income was $218 million or $0.43 per share
Net income was $218 million or $0.43 per share relative to $227 million or $0.46 per share for the comparable period. The decrease results primarily from higher income taxes and amortization, partially offset by an improvement in operating income before restructuring costs and amortization.
Free cash flow for the quarter was $173 million relative to $193 million for the comparable period. The reduction for the quarter was primarily due to timing of planned capital expenditures for the first quarter being higher than for the comparable period, partially offset by higher operating income before restructuring costs and amortization.
For Consumer, RGUs were 43,750 lower in the quarter, an improvement over the 76,035 RGUs loss in the fourth quarter of 2015.
The current quarter change reflects losses of 22,227 phone lines with the continuing unbundling of phone services market wide, 12,927 satellite video RGUs, which include the anticipated seasonal disconnections in the fall months, and 18,029 video cable RGUs and a 9,433 internet RGU gain. ■
