Faceook users in Papua New Guinea will be shut out of the social media platform for a month while the government conducts research into how it is used in the country.
Pacific PNG wants genuine people with real identities on the internet
The Post Courier reports Basil as saying the shutdown will allow genuine people with real identities to use the social network responsibly.
He said the investigation would analyse whether there was a positive impact on the people of PNG while Facebook was blocked.
Basil said that his department would also look into the possibility of creating a new social network site for people in PNG to use with genuine profiles.
He said that a time hadn't been set for implementation of these options. ■
