According to, given Norway’s strategically important geographic location, HALE-class UAVs can provide Oslo with the necessary tools to monitor vast marine areas in the High North as a member of NATO and an important U.S. ally.

The high-altitude long-duration UAV MQ-4C Triton is a marine version of the Northrop Grumman UAV RQ-4 Global Hawk. It is designed to collect information, surveillance and intelligence. UAV wing span – 39.9 m (130.9 ft), length – 14.5 m (47.6 ft), maximum take-off weight – 14628 kg, internal payload mass – 1252 kg, payload mass on the external load – 1089 kg.

The ferry range is 8,200 nautical miles, the range is about 2,000 nautical miles, the flight altitude is more than 17.2 km, the maximum speed is 331 knots, and the flight duration is more than 24 hours.

The US Broad Area Maritime Surveillance (BAMS) program provides for the joint use of the MQ-4C Triton UAV with the P-8A Poseidon base patrol aircraft (Norway acquired five such aircraft).
