The traffic topped the full-year record of 16.25 million, marked in 2015. Foreign travelers on international flights rose 22% to 11.17 million for the 11 months, thanks to more routes to such Asian destinations as South Korea, Nikkei reports.

South Korea's Asiana Airlines added more flights between Kansai Airport and Inchon Airport, while China's Tianjin Airlines began service between the airport and Dalian in July.

Air New Zealand reintroduced routes to Kansai Airport for the first time in three years.

For November alone, travelers using the airport for international flights increased 9% on the year to a record 1.52 million.
