After the U.S. and Germany, Facebook is collaborating with eight French news publishers to combat against fake news on the platform.

According to Le Monde, one of the participating news publishers, Facebook users will be able to signal content they suspect is fake.
The indicated links will be collected to a platform to which the collaborating news organisations will have access and where they can verify whether or not the content is fake.
If two companies deem an article fake, Facebook users will see a notification saying that the content has been disputed by third-party fact-checkers.
Moreover, Facebook’s algorithm “may” downgrade the visibility of content on that is branded as fake, although the precise effect on the algorithm is not clear.
Finally, Facebook will block advertising from appearing alongside content labeled as fake, thus limiting the financial interest in producing fake news. ■
