Myanmar mobile networkThe board of directors of China Mobile Limited announces that the company, together with Vodafone Group Plc, made a joint application to own and operate public telecommunications networks in Myanmar.

The selection process under supervision of the Telecommunications Operator Tender Evaluation and Selection Committee of Myanmar involves multiple stages and the Committee has not announced the successful applicants. China Mobile and Vodafone expect the Committee will award two Myanmar Telecommunication Licenses which will each have an initial term of 15 years and the successful applicants are expected to be announced in June 2013.

The Myanmar communications sector is about to enter a period of rapid structural expansion as the government seeks to increase the number of mobile operators from two to four abd to develop a mobile network infrastructure across the country.

With a comparatively young and highly literate population of around 60 million, a GDP growth rate of 5.5% per annum and mobile phone penetration currently below 10% – significantly lower than in many other emerging economies – Myanmar will be an important new market for the global mobile industry.
