China Airlines inaugurates Creative Cooking Competition

China Airlines is launching the China Airlines Cup Creative Cooking Competition and invites tertiary students to use local, eco-friendly, and creative ingredients to design and create in-flight meals.

Winning students will each receive an award of up to NTD50,000, while first place will also receive a free CAL flight ticket, and prize-winning creations will have the chance to be selected as an in-flight meal. Through this competition, China Airlines aims to discover its next in-flight Star Chef.

Registration for the China Airlines Cup Creative Cooking Competition runs until October 11, 2013. All tertiary students in catering or food-related majors are eligible to participate and can register directly with a recommendation letter from their school.

China Airlines will enlist a team of expert judges to select 24 finalists based on the culinary creativity and feasibility of their written submissions. The selected students will be announced on October 25 and elimination rounds will officially start on November 9. Each finalist can bring one classmate from their school to assist them.

For the China Airlines Cup Creative Cooking Competition, CAL has invited famous chef Cheng Yen-Chi to serve as the chief judge in the final round of competition. He will lead the judges to determine the ultimate winner based on taste, creativity, visual appeal, food safety, and overall appearance on the plate.

China Airlines is the first in the aviation industry to launch a creative cooking competition and is doing so in order to encourage creativity in young students, while enhancing knowledge and experience of in-flight meal preparation.

For the initial round of competition, participating students must prepare creative recipes for an appetizer and main course combination, which will be reviewed by a panel of judges to determine a qualifying group of 24 students. This group will visit China Pacific Catering Services to better understand meal preparation processes and critical points to monitor.

The meals created by these students will have the chance to become part of the menu offered by China Pacific Catering Services for in-flight dining on regional routes. First, second, and third prize winners will receive cash prizes and will also have the opportunity to attend corporate training courses offered by China Pacific Catering Services.
