Q1 aircraft traffic reached 42,204, up 1.5% from Q1 2015. “Traffic rose over the first three months of 2016 between the UK, Thailand, the USA and several other countries,” WAM quoted Abu Dhabi Airports chief operations officer Ahmad Al Haddabi as saying.

He remarked that the UAE capital is a major layover hub. The top-five destinations in Q1 were Bangkok, Thailand; London, UK; Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; Doha, Qatar; and New Deli, India.

Routes to India were the busiest in Q1, with over 1 million passengers, up 27% from Q1 2015. Routes to Italy saw the biggest growth in passenger traffic, at 62%.

Etihad Airways, the Abu Dhabi-based airline, bought a 49% stake in Alitalia in 2014, and the two airlines sustain a codeshare agreement covering a wide array of flights.

In March alone, the Abu Dhabi airport welcomed over 2 million passengers, up 5.6% from March 2015, according to WAM.
