U.S. farmers happy with EPA's decision to eliminate chlorpyrifos

U.S. farmers are praising the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) recent rejection of a petition to eliminate the insecticide chlorpyrifos in agriculture.

The Alabama Farmers Federation’s Carla Hornady said chlorpyrifos is a critical tool for controlling pests on more than 50 crops, including corn, cotton, soybeans and vegetables.

“Farmers in the U.S. and abroad have relied on chlorpyrifos to help protect crops against pest damage for almost 50 years,” said Hornady, the Federation’s Cotton, Soybean and Wheat & Feed Grains divisions director.

“The EPA’s decision is in line with sound, transparent science. With the summer growing season approaching, Alabama farmers are gearing up to continue using chlorpyrifos to provide safe, healthy products for consumers.”

American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) President Zippy Duvall also applauded the EPA’s ruling.

“Farmers nationwide depend on chlorpyrifos in managing their crops,” Duvall said.

“In addition to safeguarding a wide range of crops, it also protects hundreds of thousands of acres of grass seed production, where it controls aphids, cutworms and other pests.”

AFBF, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and EPA’s Scientific Advisory Panel were among groups who were opposed to the petition.
