Uruguay is curently well positioned as a supplier of quality soybeans to China, the main destination of an agri-food sector from which 412,000 tons were exported in the current harvest.

According to the Director of Agricultural Services, Federico Montes, the 70 percent of such area's turnover went to China, with the perspective that the harvest to come could approach three million tons.

In this regard, Montes indicated in a statement from the department in his charge that a good production of high quality grains is verified in an area close to one million hectares planted in the 2018-2019 harvest.

The document reports Egypt, Tunisia and Holland follow China as main oilseeds purchaser.

The Director also recalled that a few years ago 'he started a soy characterization work' with the purpose of improving protein and oil contents of the grain and appreciated that such effort is rewarded in 2019 harvest, in which shipst prefer to carry in Uruguayan ports 'for the quality of protein, different from that of Argentina'.
