UK cheese exports increased 8% in January-July

UK imports of Cheddar totalled 8,392 tonnes, down from the same month last year by 2,240 tonnes (21%).

Speciality cheese imports reached 30,667 tonnes, a decrease of 1,158 tonnes (4%) compared with the same month last year.

Butter imports amounted to 4,940 tonnes, 622 tonnes (14%) more than in the corresponding month a year earlier.

Latest figures show UK cheese exports were 11,801 tonnes, which is 10% (1,349 tonnes) less than July last year.

UK butter exports stood at 2,615 tonnes, which is 105% (1,337 tonnes) more than the same month last year.

Cumulative totals show UK cheese exports were 91,796 tonnes in Jan-Jul 2016, which is 8% more than last year.

Total exports of Cheddar were up 8% on last year at 44,631 tonnes. However, Cheddar exported to the EU reduced by 1,521 tonnes (5%), while Cheddar exports to outside the EU increased by 4,630 tonnes (48%).

UK exports of butter were 25,978 tonnes in Jan-Jul, 11,604 tonnes (81%) higher than a year earlier. This was largely driven by bulk butter exports, with EU volumes up 71% to 17,157 tonnes and non EU up 110% to 3,812 tonnes.
