Tunisia continues to be one of the major producers of olive oil in the world, the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries said in releasing figures on the 2017/18 season.

With 1.6 million tonnes of olives, olive oil production in Tunisia has reached a volume of 325,000 tonnes compared with 100,000 in the 2016/17 season. The current olive season has been of very high quality - according to a ministry statement - due to good weather conditions.

Heavy rainfall on most of the production area led to high growth levels and rather high productivity of the olive groves. In addition to the good weather conditions, significant works was done to prevent plant diseases and infections through treating over 6 million olive trees.

Anti-theft measures were also taken. Some 1,200 out of 1,700 olive trees were worked on, equal to 80%.

The ministry noted that total exports of the entire season would surpass 200,000 tonnes, with revenue of over 2 billion Tunisian dinars.

Organic olive oil production is also doing well in the country, with 170,000 tonnes produced.
