Food trade   Verifying the products are fit

Taiwan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) requires all packages of food grade dairy powder products that are over 10 kilograms in weight to be labeled as “food grade” or “for human consumption.”

Shipments of packages not containing such statements may be rejected at port if the importer cannot produce documentation verifying the products are fit for human consumption.

In November, 2016, a dairy powder shipment from the United States was detained at the port of Keelung in northern Taiwan during an inspection for improper labeling.

With the assistance of the AIT Taipei Agricultural Section, the importer was able to produce necessary documentation and obtain the release of the shipment valued at $54,000.

Importers and exporters can reduce the risk of potential shipping delays or rejections by closely following Taiwan labeling regulations.
