Romania's 2018 sunflower and maize output highest in EU

Romania's sunflower and maize output were the highest in the EU last year, the country's statistical office said on Friday, citing provisional data.

018, Romania's maize output increased by 28.1% year-on-year to 18.3 million tonnes, while sunflower production rose by 5.7% to 3.08 million tonnes, INS said in a press release.

In 2018, Romania harvested more cereal and oilseed crops, but less pulses, sugar beet, potatoes and vegetables compared to the previous year.

The area under cereals decreased by 0.3%, while production grew by 14.9% to 31.1 million tonnes in 2018.

Fields sown with maize represented 45.8% of the area put to cereals, while 40.8% was put under wheat.

Production of wheat edged up by an annual 1% at 10.1 million tonnes. Oats production was up 4.6% to 390,000 tonnes, while production of barley edged down 1.6% to 1.87 million tonnes.

Production of pulses dropped 37% on the year to 191,000 tonnes as a result of a lower yield per hectare.

Production of oilseeds increased by 3.4% to 5.15 million tonnes. Soya beans production rose by 17% to 365,000 tonnes, while rapeseed output fell 3.8% to 1.61 million tonnes.

Romania harvested 937,000 tonnes of sugar beet last year, down by 20.3% compared to 2017.

Production of vegetables edged down by 1.4% to 3.58 million tonnes, as the cultivated area decreased by 0.9%.
