At the same time, Gerhards acknowledged that he did not support the introduction of migrant workers for agricultural work, especially in the context of the global coronavirus pandemic.

"First of all, we should focus on the people of Latvia," said the minister, adding that due to the coronavirus pandemic, there are additional 20,000 unemployed persons in Latvia, and he reminded that regulatory changes have already been made to facilitate the attraction of seasonal workers in agriculture.

"It is clear that the import of migrant workers will not ensure the sustainable development of our economy as a whole," the minister said.
