Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez III is attempting to get Australia to lift their long-standing ban on Philippine banana imports.

In a meeting with Australian Foreign Minister Julia Bishop last March 16-17 in Manila, he urged the representative to reconsider their stance and explained the work they had gone through to meet Australia's standards.

“As a former Minister of Agriculture, I will raise with you the issue of the banana imports. We have been working at that for 20 years, probably.

“And we have not been able to ship to you a single box of bananas,” he told Ms. Bishop, the Finance department said in a statement.

“Japan accepts our bananas, China accepts our bananas, even the Middle East accepts our bananas,” Dominguez added.

As of January, fresh bananas were the Philippine's 15th largest export valued at $41.91 million.
