In the first quarter of 2016, Peru's artichoke exports totalled $24.7 million and the U.S. and Spain were responsible for purchasing 86.6% of the these artichoke exports.

Creole artichoke is traditionally planted in Peru. However, enterprises prefer growing Imperial Star and Green Globeen varieties, characterized by a lack of thorns and leading to greater productivity.
According to Peru's Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry, the vegetable is produced in the coastal area (February and March) and the highlands (August and September), especially in Junin, Cajamarca, Ancash, Ayacucho and Huancavelica regions, and lately in Arequipa.
Danper is the top artichoke by-products exporting company, as it accounts for 39.2% of total shipments of this vegetable. ■
