Over 20 million tons of food wasted in Mexico

Some 20.4 million tons of food are wasted each year in Mexico, transcended today from the director of the Agency of Services to Commercialization and Development of Agricultural Markets, Alejandro Vázquez.

The directive of that entity, dependent from the Secretary of Agriculture, said that generates environmental impacts for inappropriate use of water and energy.

He said the loss and waste of food occurs in all links of the chain.

Seventy percent of the loss is generated since before the harvest and until its distribution. The other 30 percent occurs in the retail sale and consumption habits, he added.

He added that Mexico is far from achieving the parameters indicated by international organisms on the consumption per capita of fruits and vegetables.

For his part, the representative in Mexico of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Crispim Moreira, assured that until this date, 842 million persons are under food insecurity and malnutrition.
