The average price of milk has risen though, by 1.7%, which has been the principal contributor to the 1.6% increase in retail sales value, AHDB says.

Pasteurised, which includes skimmed, semi-skimmed and whole milk remains the most popular type of milk, by some margin. Pasteurised milk holds 86.8% of sales volume. This contrasts starkly with the fast growing soya and other milk types, holding 1.6% and 2.1% respectively.

The biggest movement in the market has been for ‘other milk types’, volume sales of this range of products have grown by 20.8% in this time period.

Hard discounters continue to increase their share of the liquid milk market from all other retailers in the year to March 2017.
