Despite another strong decline in the vegetable production in 2019, prices in the 2019/20 season have fallen compared to the previous year, mainly as a result of supply pressure from foreign markets following an increase in Polish imports at the beginning of the 2019/20 campaign, says Mariusz Dziwulski, an expert on agricultural markets at PKO BP.

Mariusz Dziwulski says that, according to the Central Statistical Office, Poland's open ground vegetable harvest in 2019 amounted to 3.8 million tons, which entails a 6% drop compared to the already very low production in 2018.

This drop was mainly a consequence of the dry weather, which had a negative impact on crop efficiency.

"In the last two decades, the harvest has only been lower in 2015, but then the acreage was 2.3% smaller, which indicates a historically low yield.

The domestic onion production, for example, amounted to 535,000 tons (-5%), which is the lowest level in 31 years, said the expert.
