With the exception of butter, European wholesale markets were relatively stable in October, AHDB said.

Milk production is in a growth phase, which appears to be dampening buyer’s urgency to secure supplies.

Butter prices have fallen considerably through the month, with prices in the final week of October, down 12% from levels at the beginning of the month.

Average prices however remain at high levels, almost 50% up on where they were last year.

There have been reports of buyers pulling back in hopes of further drops, although with the holiday season approaching, there is some expectation that this decline will be limited, at least until the end of the year.

Prices for milk powders saw only small drops in October, while cheese prices, on average, rose marginally.

Emmental prices rose through the month, balancing the drop in prices for Edam and Cheddar.
