Bulgaria will cull 140,000 hens to fend off an outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N8 bird flu virus in a farm in the northeastern region of Dobrich, near the border with Romania, the country's food safety agency said.

All steps to eliminate the hotbed of the infection in line with European legislation were immediately taken, the agency said in statement on its website.

A three-kilometre safety zone and a ten-kilometre observation area were established around the farm, as trade and transportation of eggs and domestic, wild and other birds was banned, the agency added.

Bird fairs and exhibitions too are forbidden, and massive clinical tests of birds in the region of Dobrich are underway.
