China suspended imports from NAQUA on Aug. 2 with immediate effect. The ban meant Saudi Arabia could no longer export shrimp to China as NAQUA possessed the country's sole shrimp export approval license.
Shortly after the suspension, a local Chinese media outlet reported white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) had been detected in NAQUA’s shrimp, although an industry source later told Undercurrent News the firm had, in fact, been suspended because yellowhead disease had supposedly been detected, citing sources at the firm who had received a formal letter from Chinese authorities. ■
