Chairman Phil Knight steps down from NIKE

Phil KnightNIKE, Inc. announced that its chairman Phil Knight has retired from the board and the board has appointed Mark Parker, NIKE’s president and CEO since 2006, to the additional position of chairman.

Mr. Knight, a director since 1968, is Chairman of the Board of Directors of NIKE, Inc. He is a co-founder of the company and, except for the period from June 1983 through September 1984, served as its President from 1968 to 1990, and from June 2000 to 2004.

Prior to 1968, Mr. Knight was a certified public accountant with Price Waterhouse and Coopers & Lybrand and was an Assistant Professor of Business Administration at Portland State University.

The board appointed Mr. Knight to the position of Chairman Emeritus, with a standing invitation to attend NIKE Board meetings as an observer and to lend his experience and time to further the growth of NIKE’s business.

After running competitively at Penn State University, Mr. Parker joined Nike as one of its first footwear designers in 1979.

He was Vice President of Consumer Product Marketing, Vice President of Global Footwear and Co-President of the Nike Brand. In addition to helping lead the continued growth of the Nike brand, he is responsible for the growth of NIKE, Inc.'s global business portfolio, which includes Converse Inc. and Hurley International LLC.

The Company also announced that Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, has been appointed lead independent director of the Board.

Mr. Cook has been a NIKE director since 2005, is chair of the Board’s Compensation Committee and serves as a member of the Nominating & Corporate Governance Committee.

Mr. Cook joined Apple in March 1998 as Senior Vice President of Worldwide Operations and also served as its Executive Vice President, Worldwide Sales and Operations and Chief Operating Officer. He was Vice President, Corporate Materials for Compaq Computer Corporation from 1997 to 1998.

Previous to his work at Compaq, Mr. Cook served in the positions of Senior Vice President Fulfillment and Chief Operating Officer of the Reseller Division at Intelligent Electronics from 1994 to 1997.

Mr. Cook also worked for International Business Machines Corporation from 1983 to 1994, most recently as Director of North American Fulfillment. Mr. Cook is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Apple, Inc.
