Sydney metro secures $12 billion in funding

New budget for the Australian state of New South Wales will allocate AU$6.2bn towards Sydney Metro City & Southwest and AU$5.8bn for Sydney Metro Northwest over the next four years.


Premier Mike Baird, treasurer Gladys Berejiklian and minister for transport and infrastructure Andrew Constance made the announcement as the tunnels for Sydney Metro Northwest were handed over within budget and 10 months early. The tunnels are now ready for railway tracks to be installed and the new metro stations built.

Constance congratulated the almost 400 tunnellers and 4,600 workers who delivered the new section of new world-class railway ahead of schedule.

Funding in the next year for Sydney Metro Northwest includes laying tracks and building eight new metro stations, procurement of Sydney’s new fully-automated metro trains and ongoing construction of the 4km skytrain.

The 2016-17 funding for Sydney Metro City & Southwest includes the tender process for twin tunnels from Chatswood to Sydenham and early construction work in 2017, including building demolition work and planning and design work.

Sydney Metro Northwest, which is scheduled to open in the first half of 2019. The first tunnel boring machine for Sydney Metro City & Southwest will be in the ground before the end of 2018, with services expected to start in 2024.
