Chile wants more tourists from Argentina

The new plan starts   Discounts on hotels, restaurants and travel agencies

The Chilean government launched an initiative to attract more tourists from Argentina.

The plan in co-operation with the Argentinean Tourism Ministry offers discounts on hotels, restaurants and travel agencies in an effort to attract tourists from the neighboring country.

Argentina is the country providing Chile with the most tourists, but 2014 saw a constant decline in the number of Argentinean visitors and in August only welcomed a third of January's levels. Since January, numbers have steadily decreased from 237,000 per month to 76,000 per month in August.

"Throughout the year, Argentineans are the only ones who haven't increased in numbers and we think that will keep going until the end of the year. In global terms, thanks to the recovery of Europe, Brazil and the US's economies, the number of foreign tourists will keep increasing," Tourism Undersecretary Javiera Montes said.

"Despite their economic problems, quite a few Argentineans still traveled abroad, and so it is our job to attract that niche group that are still traveling and spending. The idea is that is less expensive to come to our country."
