Production in construction down by 0.9% in euro area

Production in constructionIn September 2016 compared with August 2016, seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector decreased by 0.9% in the euro area (EA19) and by 0.3% in the EU28, according to Eurostat.

In August 2016, production in construction grew by 0.1% in the euro area and fell by 0.6% in the EU28.

In September 2016 compared with September 2015, production in construction rose by 1.8% in the euro area, while it fell by 0.2% in the EU28.

The decrease of 0.9% in production in construction in the euro area in September 2016, compared with August 2016, is due to building construction falling by 1.1%, while civil engineering rose by 0.4%. In the EU28, the decrease of 0.3% is due to building construction falling by 0.7%, while civil engineering rose by 1.8%.

Among Member States for which data are available, the largest decreases in production in construction were recorded in Italy (-3.9%), Slovakia (-3.1%) and Portugal (-2.2%), and the highest increases in Slovenia (+4.0%), Poland (+3.3%) and Sweden (+3.1%).

The increase of 1.8% in production in construction in the euro area in September 2016, compared with September 2015, is due to civil engineering rising by 3.7% and building construction by 1.3%. In the EU28, the decrease of 0.2% is due to civil engineering falling by 1.6%, while building construction grew by 0.2%.

Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases in production in construction were recorded in the Netherlands (+7.8%), Sweden (+6.1%) and Spain (+3.9%), and the largest decreases in Slovakia (-17.9%), Poland (-16.1%) and Hungary (-13.2%).
