Sunny days   The style that everybody loves

Southern living, easy living

Southern livingSouthern interior design, originating in the hot parts of the U.S., found its place in homes around the world. It's not about strictly defined features, it's about attention to detail and combination of styles that create a unique picture.

Open spaceJust as many other good things, southern style emerged as a combination of necessity and desire for beautiful. Back then, it was important to create a home that will survive brutal southern sun, and the space inevitably had to be large and open to allow air to flow freely. And that has an innate advantage: It's easier to design a large space; it offers more possibilities and it's easier to let your imagination flow. Inevitably, that led to spacious rooms that can stand many details without being too crowded with things.

Southern FrenchBeing influenced by the Old World, southern style evolved into a mix of rural wooden homes and touch of old French style. No wonder then that we can easily incorporate different types of furniture, from rustic tables to typical French wallpaper, and we can even bring a nice, old park bench inside and all that will look beautiful. Floral motifs are always "in" and cushions and pillows are obligatory. Since the style is about combinations, don't be afraid to try different things until you're satisfied.

RusticWhen designing in southern style, there is in fact one rule: Try to resist to go modern. These days everybody's crazy about newest appliances, state-of-the-art cookers and other modern amenities, but they have no place in an interior that's truly southern. You can just as easily use, let's call it that way, a bit older appliances and you may even find yourself enjoying cooking even more. Avoid shiny metal and glass, unless it is a mirror or a window, and go rustic.

Home officeIf you are living in the south and work from home, you are lucky. You have a chance to create a home office that's far from clean, white and strict offices we used to see too often. Every corner of the house is good for that purpose and old furniture will make you feel comfortable all day long, and the only modern thing you need to see is your computer. Old kitchen cabinets may be used as a storage for files and other accessories, and a few details - like old plates or lamps! - will create a unique atmosphere, inviting and very productive.
