Spain's anti-trust watchdog fines Renfe, Deutsche Bahn 75.6m euros

Deutsche Bahn
Spain   80 percent of all merchandise transported

Spain's anti-trust watchdog CNMC said it had fined rail cargo carriers belonging to Spain's Renfe and Deutsche Bahn 75.6 million euros ($80.13 million) for reaching pacts it said affected competition.

Groups run by Renfe and Deutsche Bahn handle more than 80 percent of all merchandise transported by train in Spain, the CNMC said.

"Through these alliances, these groups, which theoretically should be competing with each other, could maintain almost unchanged the status quo that existed before the liberalisation of the cargo train sector in Spain," the CNMC said.

The companies treated each other as privileged clients and providers while Renfe commercially discriminated against other freight companies, the watchdog said.

The Renfe companies involved include Renfe Operadora and Renfe Mercancias and the Deutsche Bahn companies include Transfesa, Transfesa Rail, PIF, Hispanauto, Semat, DHIB, DB ML and DB SR Deutschland.

The Renfe affiliates were fined 65 million euros while the rest went to the Deutsche Bahn groups.
